Visual Arts

Ever since I can remember, I have always been interested in art. Starting at three and a half years old, I took studio classes to draw little animals and simple cartoons. Growing up, I continued to draw and paint, exploring many different styles of art and a variety of media, including pencil and colored pencil, acrylic paint, carré sticks, markers, watercolor, and Chinese watercolor, among others. As a science-oriented person, I believe art and science are complementary. Thus, I often incorporate things I have seen, experienced, or learned in vague shapes or meticulous details into my artworks.

Over the years, I have won many national and international awards, and my artworks were chosen as high merit and have been published by Celebrating Art every year since 2017. At school, my projects were also often selected by my teachers to use as an epitome. I look forward to deepening my passion for arts during my high school years while using my unleashed potential to contribute to society.

Childhood

Pencil (2021) 13inx21in

As we grow older and get busier and busier, we tend to forget those cherishable family moments of the past. While completing this artwork using a pencil stroke by stroke, I was immersed in the sweet memories of my childhood with my twin sister, Ella, playing and having fun together.

6 Feet

Pencil (2021) (13"x 14")

I drew 6 feet because it was one of the phrases I have heard the most in the past 2 years. Being closer or further apart, connected or separated, related or not, everyone is still living in the same community. It is especially important to be mentally and spiritually united when we have to be physically detached from each other for a long while until this whole ordeal is over.

Cat

Charcoal (2020) 12"x9"

Just a quick sketch for fun! Most of my artworks take me a very long time to complete because I want to make sure every detail is right, just like Da Vinci. Occasionally drawing casually, like sketching this cat, makes me relaxed and happy.

I believe that everyone, like me, has felt the summers getting hotter and drier, heard about animals going extinct time and time again, and seen more frequent and threatening fires all over the world. The increased temperature may endanger animals that live in cooler climates and will literally cook the marine organisms alive. Coral reefs may become even more scarce than before, or be completely wiped out. The decreased precipitation will cause plants to wither, which leaves birds with limited space for nests.Throughout history, humans have made mistakes that destroyed the land and caused major disasters, many times because they could not foresee the consequences due to the historical limitations. But now, we do know! I sincerely hope I, through my artwork, can make people see the beauty of nature and realize how humans and nature are closely connected to each other and drive people to take the actions to prevent, erase, or at least slow down climate change.

Marine Pegasus

Colored pencil and alcohol marker (15"x17")

Human activity is overloading our atmosphere with greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and methane, which has caused multiple significant and harmful impacts, from violent storms and more frequent wildfires to extremely hot summers, rising sea levels, and extinction. Ocean pollution caused by oil spills is another huge issue, which can harm sea creatures and make seafood unsafe to eat. It is critical to find new and more energy efficient ways sooner than later to combat these serious environmental issues such as using reusable energy sources like solar, hydro, nuclear and wind power, making more recyclable items, etc. I can’t wait for the day that we can cruise in an all-inclusive ship using 100% clean energy like my Marine Pegasus!

Roots (2020)

Global warming is currently a major problem that doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of attention. I have learned both in my school and also during my free time that human-caused global warming has caused massive destruction across the world, from wildfires and hurricanes to the extinction of millions of creatures in all kinds of habitats. If we do not address these problems now, sooner or later we will only be able to witness life in the history books, relying on our imaginations to portray them. Most people don’t realize that our actions have far more impact than we think, branching deep into the universe and affecting everything around us. If we do not address these problems now, our world would turn into something that is only a ghost of its former self.

Lines (2021)

Sometimes we overlook the simpler and less complex things in our life, like a building on the side of the road. But if we dive deeper into it, we can see how intricate it really is. Depending on your viewpoint and where the light hits the building, it could appear in a million different ways. Depending on where you are, the beams and edges on the structure could line up differently. Sometimes, you really just have to draw the simpler things in life to realize how amazing it all really is.
